refined gold - Heb. זָהָב מְזֻקָּק, like refined silver (כֶּסֶף מְזֻקָּק).

and for the pattern of the chariot They are the cherubim upon which the Shechinah “rides.”

which spread out [their wings] and covered Heb. לְפרְשִׂים. i.e., which were spreading and covering over the Ark, as is stated (Ex. 25: 20): “The cherubim shall spread their wings, etc.”
